Art, Food and relax in Southern Tuscany
Departure: Civitavecchia Harbour or Rome
Lenght: 2 days
If you were looking for an extraordinary tour in central Italy that would be off-the-beaten tracks this tour is for you!
After departing from Rome with our comfortable private car (or van) we stop in Sutri to see the Ancient Roman amphitheater and the caves cut into the tufa hill.
Only few miles away we reach Montefiascone, a fascinating village perched atop a rock facing the Bolsena lake, the largest volcanic lake in Italy. Here you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake and visit the medieval church of San Flaviano, an important stop for pilgrims on the old sacred path to Rome.
Our drive now crosses soft hills and small green farms that make Tuscany famous in the whole world. We reach Pitigliano, one of the most beautiful medieval cities of the region. Here we visit the town and we taste the local food and wine (vino bianco di Pitigliano).
The Maremma countryside
We spend the late afternoon in the area of Saturnia relaxing in the natural hot springs that the region is famous for. We then reach Magliano in Toscana where we have a tasty dinner with wild boar meat, mushrooms, and Morellino wine. You will also taste the local desserts: schiacciata de’santi and sfratti. After dinner, we will have a little walk on the Medieval walls of this cute little town.
We sleep in a local typical farm (agriturismo) in the countryside.
The next day we drive to the National Park of Maremma and we reach the beach of Marina di Alberese. It will be likely to see fawns and foxes. After lunch we will visit Capalbio, a ravishing medieval town with a well-preserved imposing castle.
On the way back to Rome we will also visit the Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia, UNESCO protected site, with the most famous ancient painted tombs in Europe.
