Naples is a city with a strong catholic influence which houses a number of magnificent churches of great historic and artistic value. In a company of our professional guide with art and history background, you will visit two important basilicas of the city and discover the artworks, relics and secrets that they hold.
We will visit the main Cathedral of Naples, known also as “Cattedrale di San Gennaro”, which represents an excellent example of Neo-Gothic architecture. We will explore its imposing interior richly decorated with finest frescoes, 14th-century sculptures and beautiful canvases by important Italian artists. Worthy of special mention is the Royal Chapel of San Gennaro, which houses the most evocative treasures of the Basilica, including relics of saints, altar pieces and precious Baroque frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco.
Next, will discover the Church of Gesù Nuovo which was originally built as a palace in 1470 and transformed then in the Basilica at the beginning of the 17th century when the building was sold to the Jesuits. We will take a journey through the centuries and explore the history and architecture of this sacred structure famous particularly for its high altar, richly decorated with marble columns and statures. You will especially love its unique exterior consisting of a characteristic ashlar facade and a Renaissance marble portal.
