The Road to Hell ( Guided Tour from Pozzuoli to Cuma & Phlegraean Fields)
A mythological, historical and natural trip to one of the most fascinating areas around Naples!
Do not worry...we will go to hell and come back!
This is a trip through mythological Ancient sites that were passageways to the other world. We will explore the most populated active volcanic area on earth, the Phlegraean Fields.
We will walk through the smoking craters that used to be the home of God Volcan. They emit gas and sometimes flames as an extensive furnace. You will step on the land where the giants were buried after having been defeated by the gods.
Our tour continues to the Ancient city of Puteoli (today Pozzuoli) to see one of the oldest Amphitheatres of the Roman Empire. We will visit the subterraneans below the arena where beasts and gladiators waited before the fights.
We will continue our visit to lake Avernus, the entrance to Hades. The name Avernus was often used by Roman writers as a synonym for the underworld. According to Virgil, Aeneas descends to the underworld through a grotto near the lake. So did Odysseus and other famous heroes.
We will have lunch in one of the top-rated restaurants in the area that local people love.
Our next stop will be the Ancient Greek colony of Cuma and its acropolis with a spectacular view over the bay. As the Emperors often did, we will question the Sybil, the mythological female oracle who hid in a deep dark cave.
Our road to hell will end in Baia, a lovely village where wealthy Ancient Romans spent wild and dissolute vacations. There, we will explore an original cistern that provided water to the Emperor Augustus' fleet: the piscina mirabilis.
This off-the-beaten path itinerary is extremely rich of historic, aristic and natural wonders. It is one of the most interesting tours you can take in Italy. Great value for a memorable experience!
