Full Description
Naples is a city with a strong Catholic influence, home to numerous magnificent churches of great historic and artistic value. Accompanied by our professional guide with a background in art and history, you will visit two important basilicas in the city and discover the artworks, relics, and secrets they hold.
We will begin at the main Cathedral of Naples, also known as the “Cattedrale di San Gennaro,” which is an excellent example of Neo-Gothic architecture. We will explore its imposing interior, richly decorated with exquisite frescoes, 14th-century sculptures, and beautiful canvases by renowned Italian artists. Noteworthy is the Royal Chapel of San Gennaro, which houses the most evocative treasures of the Basilica, including relics of saints, altar pieces, and precious Baroque frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco.
Next, we will discover the Church of Gesù Nuovo, originally built as a palace in 1470 and transformed into a basilica in the early 17th century when the building was sold to the Jesuits. We will journey through the centuries, exploring the history and architecture of this sacred structure, particularly famous for its high altar, adorned with marble columns and statues. You will especially appreciate its unique exterior, featuring a characteristic ashlar façade and a Renaissance marble portal.
