Full Description
Castel Sant’Angelo was originally built between 123 and 139 AD as the monumental tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It served as a mausoleum for the imperial family until the death of Emperor Caracalla. Later, under Emperor Aurelian, it was repurposed as a military outpost and incorporated into the city’s defensive walls, transforming it into a true fortress.
The name Castel Sant’Angelo dates back to the late 6th century, deriving from a legendary miraculous apparition of the Archangel Michael atop the mausoleum, signaling the end of a devastating plague. From the late 14th century, the Popes used it as a castle, adding beautiful and elegant apartments.
During this tour, you will explore how the structure evolved over centuries—from a mausoleum to a fortress, a state treasury, and finally, a museum housing remarkable artworks. You will visit the four corner bastions, each named after one of the Evangelists, ascend the helical ramp winding through the Roman core, and view the courtyard of the Angel as well as the Papal apartments. The tour concludes with a special opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view of Rome from the Angel’s terrace.
